Reflections & Reports

My EDGE project was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I had during this last Summer. My EDGE project, interning at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum, helped me develop skills that I have not possessed prior to the starting of it and has also fulfilled me with many valuable insights about leadership as well as other aspects of life. While interning at the museum, I was able to put my leadership skills that I already had to the test in certain situations. For example, this last June, I was able to spend 20 hours during the course of two days offering my aid to the museum for an event known as the "Frontier Folk Festival". While assisting the museum with the Frontier Folk Festival, I had the opportunity to test and improve my leadership skills when assisting the guest performers and A/V technician with whatever they needed me to do. I was able to help the guest performers with their instruments and leading them to the practice area as well as assisting the A/V technician with sound checks and equipment. This was a very rewarding and insightful experience as well as my experience leading Elementary school children in museum day-activities.

While leading the children in the museum day-activities known as "1-10's", I gained more knowledge and insight than I anticipated. During the 1-10's, I lead children in candle-making, rope making, sack races and assisting my supervisor with yelling "rotate" when it was time for the kids to move on to the next activity. The most important leadership skill I gained was patience. While leading the children, it took a lot of patience to get them to do what I asked them to do. Along with patience, I learned time management and speaking skills when leading the children in the day-activities. After developing better leadership skills, I know that I will be able to succeed in desired future career as a history professor.

I also gained a lot of insight on leadership during the course of my EDGE project. One of them being patience. As mentioned earlier, I learned to have much more patience after the day-activities but I also learned a lot about patience when I was painting the museum's gazebo as well as doing ground-maintenance work. These hours of hard work taught me patience because I persevered through them in the heat of the summer while keeping a good attitude about them. During the course of this internship, I also gained new insight with customer service as well. When I would assist guests with their needs, I learned how to take the initiative with a smile no matter what was going on. In the end, my EDGE project helped me better myself in ways that I would have never imagined and supplied me with many helpful leadership skills that will translate to my future workplaces.

During the length of my EDGE project, I was able to write a book review about Paiute Indian legends (not yet published) and submit my time on SUU's "Banner" system.

Project Details

Over the course of this last Summer, I have had the opportunity to participate in an internship at Cedar City's Frontier Homestead State Park Museum. As an intern, I've greatly assisted the museum's staff in a number of various projects such as cataloguing some of the items there, demonstrating interpretive activities with the guests and a plethora of maintenance projects throughout the museum. Not only were the tasks that I have completed were very helpful for the museum and its staff, but it was an overall fulfilling experience for myself in that I was able to be of great assistance as well as being able to get exposed to many different elements of History that will prove to be valuable for me studying to become a University professor. I now know that not only can I build my resume with my studies as an undergrad, but I can also add my EDGE project experience to it which will indeed have a positive effect on me finding a teaching position at whatever university I may land a career at.
ers can relate to you on a more personal level.

Project Overview

My EDGE project will be the completion of a paid internship at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum this Summer. During this internship, my job will be doing extensive amounts of cataloguing of items that happen to have historical significance. This project will also benefit my education as a history major because I will be able to surround myself with historical documents and other items as well as being supervised by a history professor/curator. Not only will I be developing crucial elements of leadership, but I will be of service to the museum and the community.
